The study published in Pediatrics showed a significant reduction in the incidence and duration of fever, cough and runny noses and the number of antibiotic prescriptions for those children taking HOWARU® Protect Kid (Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07™ and Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM®)
The double-blind, placebo-controlled study measured the incidence and duration of cold- and flu-like symptoms in healthy children in winter. In this study, conducted from November to May, 326 eligible children (3-5 years of age) were assigned randomly to receive placebo (N = 104), Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM® (N = 110), or L acidophilus NCFM® in combination with Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07™ (N = 112).
After 6 months, the clinical study showed that, relative to the placebo group, combination probiotics reduced the incidence of fever by 72.7% (P = .0009), of coughing by 62.1% (P = .005) and of rhinorrhea by 58.8% (P = .03). There was also a reduction in the duration of illness by nearly half the number of days for those children taking combination probiotics. In addition, antibiotic use incidence was reduced, relative to placebo, by 84.3% (strain combination; P < .0001).
